Jesus Loves Me (Cristo me Ama)

Life has been particularly challenging for me and my family lately. We are holding on to Jesus and knowing He'll never let go of us. His love never fails, not even in our darkest days. 

Today I was reminded of a story I heard about a missionary who was on furlough for health reasons. He still wanted to serve in some way, so he volunteered at a mental hospital once a week. They put him in the worst spot - the locked room with the most severe mental cases. It was a horrible environment. The man had no idea what good he could do. 

Then the Lord whispered to his heart, "Sing Jesus Loves Me." So the man sat down and began to sing. Over and over he sang the little children's song. At the end of an hour, he got up and left. 

After that, every week he would go back into the same room and for an hour, he would sit and sing Jesus Loves Me. Over the weeks, the people in that room began to change. Some started singing along with him. Others were quiet instead of wailing or yelling as they had done before. 

After several months, when the missionary returned to his foreign field of service, almost every person in that room had either been discharged from the hospital in good mental health, or they'd improved enough to be moved back with the more functional patients.

What brought about such a miraculous recovery for those tortured souls? The truth that Jesus loved them. 

Whatever circumstances we face, there is never a time when we don't need to be reminded that Jesus loves us. Perhaps that's why God's Word is so full of His declarations of love for us. Here are a few of my favorite verses about God's love:

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. -Psalm 63:3

The LORD is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made. -Psalm 145:13b

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you. -Isaiah 54:10

I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with loving-kindness. -Jeremiah 31:3b

And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -Romans 5:5, 8

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. –Ephesians 3:17b-19

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! -1 John 3:1a

Knowing we are loved by God Himself is as essential to life as the air we breathe. 

I hope you'll take some time today to receive God's love anew. And maybe as you go through this week, the song that will bless you the most will be a simple children's chorus.

Cristo me Ama

La vida ha sido un particular desafío para mí y mi familia últimamente. Estamos agarrándonos de Jesús y sabiendo que él nunca nos suelta. Su amor nunca falla, ni aun en nuestros días más oscuros.

Hoy recordé una historia que escuché acerca de un misionero que estaba de licencia por razones de salud. Todavía quería servir de alguna manera, entonces fue como voluntario a un hospital mental una vez a la semana. Lo pusieron en el peor sitio – la habitación cerrada con llave con los casos mentales más severos. Era un ambiente horrible. El hombre no tenía ni idea que bien podía hacer él.

Entonces el Señor murmuró a su corazón “Canta ‘Cristo me ama’.” Así que el hombre se sentó y comenzó a cantar. Una y otra vez cantó la canción para niños pequeños. Después de una hora se levantó y salió.

Después de eso, cada semana iba a la misma habitación y durante una hora, se sentaba y cantaba “Cristo me ama.” Con el paso de las semanas, la gente en esa habitación empezó a cambiar. Algunos empezaron a cantar con él. Otros se quedaban callados en vez de gemir o gritar como lo habían hecho antes.

Después de varios meses, cuando el misionero regresó a su campo de servicio en el extranjero, casi todas las personas en esa habitación habían sido dadas de alta del hospital con buena salud mental o habían mejorado suficientemente para que los pusieran de nuevo con los pacientes más funcionales.

¿Qué trajo una recuperación tan milagrosa a aquellas almas torturadas? La verdad de que Cristo les amaba.

Cualquier circunstancia que enfrentemos, no hay un tiempo en que no necesitemos que se nos recuerde que Cristo nos ama. Quizá sea por eso que la Palabra de Dios está tan llena de Sus declaraciones de amor para nosotros. Aquí están algunos de mis versículos favoritos acerca del amor de Dios:

Tu amor es mejor que la vida; por eso mis labios te alabarán. -Salmo 63:3

Fiel es el Señor a su palabra y bondadoso en todas sus obras. -Salmo 145:13b

Aunque cambien de lugar las montañas y se tambaleen las colinas, no cambiará mi fiel amor por ti ni vacilará mi pacto de paz, —dice el Señor, que de ti se compadece—. -Isaías 54:10

Con amor eterno te he amado; por eso te sigo con fidelidad, -Jeremías 31:3b 

Y esta esperanza no nos defrauda, porque Dios ha derramado su amor en nuestro corazón por el Espíritu Santo que nos ha dado.

Pero Dios demuestra su amor por nosotros en esto: en que cuando todavía éramos pecadores, Cristo murió por nosotros. -Romanos 5:5, 8

Y pido que, arraigados y cimentados en amor, puedan comprender, junto con todos los santos, cuán ancho y largo, alto y profundo es el amor de Cristo; en fin, que conozcan ese amor que sobrepasa nuestro conocimiento, para que sean llenos de la plenitud de Dios. -Efesios 3:17b-19

¡Fíjense qué gran amor nos ha dado el Padre, que se nos llame hijos de Dios! ¡Y lo somos! -1 Juan 3:1a

Saber que somos amados por Dios mismo es tan esencial para la vida como el aire que respiramos.

Confío en que tomarás algo de tiempo hoy para recibir el amor de Dios renovado. y tal vez mientras pasas esta semana, la canción que más te bendecirá será un sencillo coro para niños.

Lessons in Romance (Lecciones de Romance)

Over the holidays my mom and I watched a lot of Hallmark Christmas movies. Yes, they're cheesy and predictable, but for the most part they're sweet, clean entertainment. 

The funny thing is that a lot of these movies have the same problems and dynamics in the romances. You'd think the characters wouldn't have to keep learning the same lessons about love over and over....

So, just for fun, in honor of Valentine's Day, here are 15 lessons in romance I've learned from watching Hallmark movies. (Bonus points if you can name a movie for each lesson.) =) 

Enjoy! 

1) First impressions aren't always accurate. Don't be afraid to rethink your initial estimation of a person (whether good or bad).

2) If your boyfriend/girlfriend would rather watch Jeopardy than gaze at the stars with you, you're in for disappointment. 

(Unless of course you both feel the same way and watching Jeopardy together is one of your favorite things to do.)

3) If you can't or don't laugh together, then say a kind farewell and wait for someone you can laugh with. 

4) When your boyfriend/girlfriend gives you a gift you absolutely don't like, it tells you one of two things: either they don't really know you, or they're clueless. If they don't know you, move on to someone who'll enjoy getting to know the real you. If they're clueless, then maybe you've been holding back about who you really are. Time for a heart to heart talk to share about who you are and what you like.

5) If the person you're dating always has to win, walk away before you both lose.

6) A big, public proposal may make a girl say yes (peer pressure), but in the end she'll usually break it off (especially if he proposes in front of a large group of strangers--bad move). Guys, if the girl doesn't respond to your proposal with an immediate and resounding "Yes!" then she probably wasn't ready to say yes at all. And girls, if a guy proposes without a ring, by all means feel free to say, "No thank you."

7) If your boyfriend/girlfriend never really listens to you, then you don't actually have a "relationship." Every successful relationship requires listening to each other.

8) True love will walk through the rain for you. If your boyfriend/girlfriend isn't willing to inconvenience themself for you, even a little, then save yourself for someone who will. 

9) If you're dating someone who is a smooth-talker but is actually a jerk, undoubtedly at least one person among your family or friends can see it, and they've tried to warn you. Listen to them! 

10) When your guy says he needs to tell you something, for goodness sake, let him talk! Don't interrupt him with what you think he's going to say. 

11) If you're having a lot of fun flirting with/spending time with someone who's not your boyfriend/girlfriend, then you're either dating the wrong person or you're not ready for a serious relationship (or both). 

12) Sometimes the perfect person for you is right under your nose. If you can't see them, try sitting on the floor and looking up. 

13) If you love someone and know they're right for you, then believe them when they give you an explanation for a questionable situation. Don't believe the jealous ex or the meddling mother, who are likely to distort the truth.

14) Falling in love makes people more willing to change - this can be good or bad. If the relationship results in you changing who you are to become who the other person expects you to be, that's bad. If it results in both of you changing to become better versions of yourselves, then that's good. =) 

15) When you know you've found the right person, don't give up! Love always perseveres.

Durante las vacaciones mi mamá y yo miramos muchas películas de navidad de Hallmark. Sí, son cursis y predecibles, pero la mayoría son entretenimiento dulce, limpio.

Lo chistoso es que muchas de estas películas tienen los mismos problemas y dinámicas en los romances. Pensarías que los personajes no tendrían que estar aprendiendo las mismas lecciones acerca del amor una y otra vez…

Así que, sólo por diversión, en honor al Día de San Valentín, aquí hay 15 lecciones en romance que he aprendido mirando las películas de Hallmark. (Puntos extra si puedes nombrar una película para cada lección.) =)

¡Disfrútalo!

1) Las primeras impresiones no son siempre correctas. No temas reconsiderar tu primera impresión de una persona (sea buena o mala).

2) Si tu novio/a prefiere mirar un programa de concurso que mirar las estrellas contigo, vas a desilusionarte.

(Claro, a menos que los dos sientan lo mismo y mirar un programa de concurso sea una de sus cosas favoritas para hacer juntos.)

3) Si no pueden reír juntos, o no lo hacen, entonces di un amable adiós y espera por alguien con quien puedas reír.

4) Cuando tu novio/a te da un regalo que no te gusta nada, eso te dice una de dos cosas: o realmente no te conoce o no tiene ni idea. Si no te conoce, consigue alguien que disfrutará conociendo el verdadero tú. Si no tiene ni idea, entonces tal vez has estado reteniendo información acerca de quién eres realmente. Es tiempo para una charla de corazón a corazón para compartir quien eres y qué te gusta.

5) Si la persona con quien estás saliendo siempre tiene que ganar, aléjate antes de que ambos pierdan.

6) Una declaración grande, pública puede hacer que una chica diga sí (presión de los compañeros), pero al final ella generalmente rompe el compromiso (especialmente si él se declara en frente de un grupo grande de extraños – mal movimiento). Chicos, si la chica no responde a su declaración con un inmediato y sonoro “¡sí!” entonces probablemente no estaba de ninguna manera lista. Y chicas, si un chico se declara sin un anillo, por todos los medios, siéntanse libres para decir: “No, gracias.”

7) Si tu novio/a nunca te escucha verdaderamente, entonces en realidad no tienen una “relación.” Cada relación exitosa requiere escucharse uno al otro.

8) El verdadero amor caminará bajo la lluvia por ti. Si tu novio/a no está dispuesto/a a pasar esa inconveniencia por ti, siquiera un poquito, entonces, guárdate para alguien que lo hará.

9) Si estás saliendo con alguien que es buen hablador pero en realidad es un idiota, sin lugar a dudas por lo menos una persona en tu familia o en tu grupo de amigos puede verlo y han tratado de advertirte. ¡Escúchalos!

10) Cuando tu chico te dice que necesita decirte algo, por favor, ¡Déjalo hablar! No lo interrumpas con lo que tú piensas que va a decir.

11) Si te estás divirtiendo coqueteando o pasando tiempo con alguien que no es tu novio/a, entonces o estás saliendo con la persona equivocada o no estás listo/a para una relación seria (o ambas).

12) A veces la persona perfecta está justo bajo tu nariz. Si no puedes verla, intenta sentarte en el piso y mirar hacia arriba.

13) Si amas a alguien y sabes que es el correcto para ti, entonces créele cuando te da una explicación para una situación cuestionable. No le creas al/a celoso/a ex o a la madre entrometida, quien posiblemente distorsionará la verdad.

14) Enamorarse hace que las personas estén más dispuestas a cambiar – esto puede ser bueno o malo. Si la relación resulta en que tú cambias para convertirte en quien la otra persona espera que seas, eso es malo. Si resulta en que ambos cambian para convertirse en mejores versiones de sí mismos, entonces es bueno.=)

15) Cuando sepas que has encontrado a la persona correcta, ¡no desmayes! El amor siempre persevera.

This life is full of highs and lows and ordinary moments in between. If it weren't for God's presence with me, life would overwhelm me at times. The good news is that in every situation, in every moment, God's grace is present. His grace never fails. 

In the pain, in the triumph, in the long, waiting hours, His grace is always there.

Siempre Ahí

¿Alguna vez has pensado en esta loca experiencia que llamamos vida en la tierra?

En el transcurso de una semana – podemos celebrar una nueva vida con una amiga que acaba de tener un bebé. Podemos llorar con alguien que a perdido a un ser querido. Podemos ver tragedias horribles en las noticias. Podemos escuchar de milagros asombrosos de Dios en tierras lejanas. Podemos ver campeones superando las posibilidades en grandes victorias deportivas, mientras nos sentamos en el sofá sintiéndonos miserables con un resfriado común.

¡Oh la dicotomía de todo!

Alegría, tristeza.

Celebración, duelo.

Risa, lágrimas.

Victoria, desesperación.

Asombro, incredulidad.

Bondad, maldad.

Esta vida está llena de altibajos y momentos comunes entre ellos. Si no fuera por la presencia de Dios conmigo, la vida me abrumaría a veces. La buena noticia es que cada situación, en cada momento, la gracia de Dios está presente. Su gracia nunca falla.

En el dolor, en el triunfo, en las largas horas de espera, Su gracia siempre está ahí.
